Daughters of the Future, Keepers of the Past

GARFIELD COUNTY – Local DUP Camps in Search of New Members; Membership Open to Women with a Wide Array of Linkages to Utah Pioneer Ancestry

The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) are always looking for new members. Sometimes women think the DUP is a club, a religious group, or a group of old women who just like to quilt. Not so… We are the International Daughters of Utah Pioneers Organization. Our theme is: Daughters of the Future – Keepers of the Past. Our motto is: Our Heritage Binds Us Together.

To become a member, you must be able to share a history of ancestors who were “pioneers.” Your pioneer ancestor was anyone who met one of the following qualifications: 1- came to the Utah Territory/State of Deseret from 1847 to May 10, 1869, when the continental railroad was completed; 2- died coming to the Utah Territory; 3- was born in the Utah Territory before May 10, 1869; 4- a pioneer ancestor who crossed the plains to or through the geographic area covered by the State of Deseret/Utah Territory between July 1847 and May 1869, such as, trappers and hunters, freighters, members of wagon companies (Mormon or non-Mormon), members of the Mormon Battalion, members of Johnston’s Army, passengers of the Ship Brooklyn who landed in San Diego or San Bernardino and then travelled through the geographic area of the Utah Territory or the State of Deseret. Also, those who worked on the railroad in the geographic area covered by the Utah Territory before May 10, 1869, or anyone who traveled from any direction, north, south, east, or west to or through the geographic area covered by the State of Deseret and/or the Utah Territory.

Our membership is dwindling due to elderly members dying or others that must move to other areas. Please come join us and help us preserve this wonderful organization in our local areas. Any woman, age 18 or older, that is interested in pioneers can join or participate in the DUP!

We meet once a month and enjoy a history lesson from our “pioneers.” We are given an opportunity to share histories of our own ancestors and the legacy they left us. Those of us who are fortunate to have these histories in our families, of endurance and triumphs, can draw strength from them. These stories give us the strength to pull our proverbial handcarts through our own Martin’s Cove and up our own Rocky Ridge.

If you have these or other stories in your families, do not keep them to yourself. Please share them with your descendants and others of interest. Being a member or participant of the DUP will help to get you excited in sharing these histories.
We have 4 Camps in Garfield County:

Please consider now, your opportunity, to make a valuable contribution in keeping alive the history of your precious ancestors. Everyone is welcome!
