Joe Hiskey, of Royal’s Market, is Subject of Next ‘Classic Conversation’ with Entrada Institute on May 5 at Robbers Roost in Torrey

TORREY – If you have spent any time in Wayne County, you are likely to have shopped at Royal’s Food Town, also known as Royal’s Market, in Loa. Joe Hiskey is the owner and operator of Royal’s, and he will converse with Don Gomes in a “Classic Conversation” on Thursday May 5 at 6 p.m. In this program, hosted by the Entrada Institute at Robbers Roost in Torrey, Joe and Don will engage in a 1-hour exchange in the presence of a limited live, in-person audience that can also participate in the conversation.

Before returning to Wayne County, Joe spent several years managing stores in Las Vegas. Often found handling administrative duties and even stocking shelves at Royal’s, he is easy to recognize because he actually wears a tie to work.

At one time, we’re told, there was a grocery store in every Wayne County town. But times have changed. While there are modest stores in Hanksville and Torrey, Royal’s is the primary source of groceries in the area.

With Hiskey at the helm, the store is a major supporter of community events and activities. You’ll find the name Royal’s prominently displayed as a supporter of local sports activities, the County Fair, the Entrada Sunset Series, and the Cowboy Way Festival. Joe is a fan of country music and can often be found playing tunes on his guitar. But what else might you want to know about him?

Produced and moderated by Gomes, vice president of the Entrada Institute, these “Classic Conversations” take the art of interviewing to its highest level. Before settling in Torrey, Don spent 25 years as an award-winning public broadcaster in Utah, Indiana, and Texas, and his years of experience bring out the best in all those he interviews.
